Google or Yahoo! – that is the question….

We are all familiar with the two search engines, but which one is the best per click bet? According to search writer Jeremy Crane, every month there are about 7.5 billion search queries posed in the U.S. But, there are only 5 billion search referrals each month. This means approximately 1/3 of all search queries go unanswered. In other words, no search result is clicked. Crane writes the obvious question to ask is, “which search engine is doing the best job from a ‘search fulfillment’ standpoint?”

According to Crane, Google appears to dominate because it gets about 2/3rds of all web search volume. But, is volume necessarily an indicator of effectiveness? Crane suggests we look at the numbers from a “search fulfillment” perspective and writes that Yahoo! is the overall winner. 75% of all searches done on Yahoo! during August of 2007 resulted in a referral – or a click on a search result. According to Crane, a search on Google results in a referral only 65% of the time.
